Project Overview

In early 2022, Melbourne Stone Construction was engaged to build an outdoor cave for the new Gondwana Garden at Melbourne Museum. The cave acts as both the transition between exhibits and the main feature of the garden.
Over the course of the project we installed more than 60 tonnes of stone. It was an absolute highlight to be part of, and the exhibit is open to the public, so it’s well worth a visit.
Design Approach

It was important to use locally sourced stone, so we worked with granite boulders from Harcourt in country Victoria. Every boulder needed to do two jobs: provide genuine structural strength, and recreate the look and feel of the prehistoric period the garden represents.
Details

The cave was built from Harcourt granite boulders up to 2m in size, with many weighing over a tonne each. Each boulder was meticulously positioned to ensure strength and stability while achieving a natural, ancient appearance, with over 60 tonnes of stone placed in total.
