Project Overview

Overview Image

Melbourne Stone Construction was engaged to bring the Mooroolbark train station upgrade to life using stone sourced from Castlemaine in country Victoria. The project delivered 750 m² of dry laid Castlemaine stone feature walls throughout the new station precinct.

For the local community, it was important that a natural material anchored such an extensive upgrade. Stone gave the new station a sense of permanence and connection to its landscape, and our team was chosen to deliver this key part of the project.

Design Approach

Yarrabee Castlemaine stone kept the material local to Victoria and in keeping with the surrounding environment. The dry laid technique lets the natural shape, texture and colour of each stone carry the finish, giving the walls a hand-built, organic character that softens the station’s contemporary architecture.

The walls were built from Yarrabee Castlemaine stone ranging from 200mm to 300mm thick, with each piece selected and dry laid by hand. Across 750 m², the result is a consistent, natural finish that ties the station precinct together and will weather beautifully over time.
